The word polymer is composed of two parts "poly" and "mer" where poly means several and mer means single. Polymers are composed of repeating units, which "mers" are actually the same repeating units.
Polymer products and polymers in general can be one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional.
One-dimensional polymer: repeating units are placed in chains from left and right and are connected to each other.
Two-dimensional polymer: repeating units are placed in a plane from top and bottom, left and right and are connected.
3D polymer: repeating units in a 3D space are connected from top and bottom, left and right and back and front.
Polymer materials entered human life in the 20th century and created many changes in human life by producing various polymer products. Polymer products include rubbers, plastics, resins and foams.
In general, we have two types of polymers: homopolymers and copolymers
Homopolymer: Polymers made from one type of monomer are classified as homopolymers.
Copolymer: Polymers made of two or more monomers are classified as copolymers.
Copolymers also have two subcategories: random copolymer and block copolymer
Random copolymer: In this type of copolymer, the monomers are repeated without any particular order along the polymer chain. The polymer product that we will take as an example for this category of polymers is polypropylene random copolymer, which is significantly used in the production of construction plastic pipes.
Block Copolymer: In this type of copolymer, monomers of the same shape are stuck together. The polymer product that we can bring for this category of copolymers, for example, is polypropylene block copolymer, which is used in the automotive industry in the process of producing bumpers, dashboards and trims. It is significantly used inside the car.
